Jose Luis grew up on a ranch in Tonaya, Mexico (in the Jalisco state).  He graduated from the Collegio Militaire (the Military College) in Mexico City and began a career in the Mexican Military.   He joined the Mexican Calvary and competed with the Military team in National Competitions and International Competitions.  As well as competing horses owned by the military, he also trained his own horse, Quelite, an off-the-track thoroughbred stallion.  With Quelite, he was selected to compete on the Mexican Team in the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow winning the Team Bronze Medal in Three-Day Eventing.  He also competed in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal (Equestrian Events in Bromont), as well as the 1982 World Championships in Germany.

Mexican Olympic Eventing Team

While training for the Olympic team, Jose Luis trained under numerous clinicians in Germany, as well as in Mexico.  Additionally, he was selected to train at the prestigious Equestrian School in Buenes Aires, Argentina for a year.  At this School, he trained every day under a Polish Master riding young horses in dressage, jumping, cross country and steeplechase.   Pictured here is a mural honoring the Mexican Eventing Team that won the Team Bronze Medal in 1980.  This mural is in the Presidential Stables in Mexico City.
